Can you use a humidifier without the filter?

We have a Vicks brand humidifier and my son and I both have really bad sore throats. I was wanting to plug in my humidifier/vaporizer machine, but there is no filter in it. Probably can’t get one until later tonight. Do you think it would be okay to run it today without it, or would it cause worse conditions as far as our colds?

The filter that it without filter does is filter does is filter does is good fresh bottled water so be sure if you use some.
