Gallon Humidifier

I’ve heard that some people put salt in their humidifiers and I just bought a new vicks warm air humidifier to ease my sons coughs at night. It states on the paperwork included that salt can be added if desired. What does the salt do?
I suppose I should mention that my son has a COLD and I’m using the humidifier to help loosen it up. And in the event that there is no improvement after a week or so, we will be paying a visit to our doctor. I promise, sheesh!!!

It causes me no end of health problems, primarily sinus problems but also dry skin, etc. It’s also pretty large, however; like 15×30, and an average humidifier doesn’t do squat. Larger humidifiers are too expensive, and I’m not sure they’d do the trick either. Any suggestions?

If we get a 14 gallon 2900 sq ft console humidifier, will it work well if we actually have 2 levels, 900 sq ft on one and 900 sq ft on the other?
If yes, would it be better to place the humidifier on the upper or lower level or does that depend on what kind of humidifier it is…
