What is the point of having a filter in a humidifier? Why not just get filter-free?

People drink tap water…..so why do we need to filter the tap water before it goes through the humidifier?

I would think that if you just rinse the humidifier and change the water every night, that there is no point of wasting money on filters for a humidifier. Just buy a filter-free humidifer

Does tap water in a humidifier create dust?

Joshua asked:

I run my humidifier all winter long, and I have noticed I have a ridiculous amount of dust! Could using tap water in my humidifier cause dust?

Should I use distilled water to prevent this?

I do not have central air, live in an apartment, and keep doors and windows closed.

How do I moisturize the air without a humidifier?

I live where it gets very cold and dry.My little ones and I are affected badly by the dry air. We can’t use our tap water in a humidifier because of the chemicals. We don’t have the space or money for jugs of water. I’d like to know if there is another way to moisturize the air in our home.
The chemicals in the tap water make the water coming out of the humidifier smell horrible (best way to describe it is like urine) and leaves a white film all over everything. it also does that when we boil it. About the distilled water, like I said we don’t have the money or space for the gallon jugs.

Can I use rainwater as distilled water in my cool mist humidifier?

IM12BNVED asked:

I have a cool mist humidifier for my bedroom that i use at night. it suggests to use distilled water. if i use tap water dust like particles start accumulating all over my room. (on night stand, dressers, etc.)

Currently, i use purified drinking water (the PRIMO water) that you get from Lowes. but this gets expensive seeing that the humidifier chamber is rather large and uses alot of water daily. i went to my local grocery store and bought some 1 gallon bottles of distilled water. this too is expensive and time consuming. can i collect rainwater and use this in my “American Red Cross” cool mist humidifier? or do i need to process the rainwater through carbon or any other methods? collecting the water in a bucket and then dumping this into 1 gallon bottles would be the easiest and cheapest way, but is it the same, is is safe, and will it cause white dust particles to accumulate? thanks!!!

Is it safe to put bleach in the water you’re going to use in a humidifier?

I use a humidifier constantly during the winter months, and the tap water we have around here is awful, scaling up the filter. I had the bright idea of saving the water that was created by our dehumidifer this summer in the humidifier over the winter; free and clean. However, I’m worried about things growing in it during the 3 months or so before I start to use it. Would it be safe to put a little bleach in it, or would the small amount I use (2 tsps per gallon) be harmful to breathe?
