Gallon Humidifier

I just purchased a Vick’s Warm Air Humidifier and noticed halfway through the last tank of water that all of the water in the tank had turned gray. Does anyone have any idea why this happened? Any help is much appreciated.

I have this humidifier which I have not used in a while but left water in it. I want to store it but want to clean it first, and I threw away the cleaning instructions. If anyone knows how please share so it will be ready when I need to use it again.
